In Northern Thailand, Simstars Design and Manufacturing Co. Ltd (Simstars) manufactures cast and hand-finished jewellery of outstanding quality, based on traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
In April 2017, Simstars became certified for social accountability standard SA8000, demonstrating the company ‘s dedication to guarantee fair treatment and good working conditions for its staff in Thailand. SA8000 certification is a rigorous process and Simstars was certified as one of only two jewellery manufacturers in Thailand.
In the context of its CSR policy, Simstars also acquired OHSAS 18001 certification, which ensures a safe and healthy working environment, and ISO 14001, which is an internationally recognised and respected industry standard on environmental management.
Simstars was established in 2010 as a joint venture between SimStars International BV – specialised in design, marketing and sales of jewellery – and Thai Craft Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TCM) – a manufacturer of silver jewellery based in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Simstars built a new jewellery production facility including equipment for innovative technologies such as nano-coatings. The company also developed new jewellery designs, like the chain and pendant system marketed under the brand ‘Nikki Lissoni’ (see www.nikkilissoni.com) that can hold different models of coins. The Nikki Lissoni collection has been expanded since its launch with interchangeable rings, earrings, bracelets and bangles.
Simstars employs around 200 staff and offers excellent working conditions like working in a safe and spacious workplace in accordance with strict international standards, dormitories and a day-care facility. Staff is offered a career path that will enable them to grow within the company through an internal training plan.
The project was supported with a grant from the PSI programme of the Dutch government. Advance Consulting assisted the project partners with their application for the grant and project management.
