Partners for Water - water sector

The programme 'Partners for Water' is a joint initiative of six departments of the Government of the Netherlands, developed to strengthen the international position of the Dutch water sector by uniting forces (private sector, public sector, non-profit sector and knowledge institutes).

In 2011 'Partners for Water' launched the programme ´Working with water worldwide´ for private and public-private initiatives in 30 countries, covering between 25-80% of project costs with a maximum of  €600,000. This differs per project and per organization. With this 'seed money' three types of activities can be funded:

  • Environmental Feasibility studies
  • Demonstration and pilot projects
  • Knowledge enhancement project

Dutch companies and organisations can apply for the seed money, presenting their own project proposal. There are 2 tender rounds per year (28 April 2011 is the closing date for the first round and 15 September 2011 for the second round). It is only possible to apply for subsidies for projects that fit in with one or more of the following themes:

  • Climate
  • Food and ecosystems
  • Drinking water and sanitation (including wastewater)
  • Safety
  • Governance

The project must in all cases meet the following requirements:
  • the long-term continuity of the consortium must be sufficiently guaranteed;
  • the project must meet a clearly identified need in the target country (demand-driven);
  • the project must reflect Partners for Water themes;
  • the project must involve at least two parties that are based in the Netherlands.

It is important that the project contributes to the strengthening of the international position of the Dutch water sector and enhances long-term collaboration between project partners. Projects should be innovative in nature and be able to create considerable spin-offs.

The project can take place in the following countries:
  • Africa: Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, South Africa
  • Asia: Bangladesh, China, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Europe: Estonia, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Rumania, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey
  • Latin America: Brazil, Mexico

Special attention is paid to the following deltacountries: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Mozambique and Vietnam.
