General information
Project location: Bangladesh
Consortium: Winall Hi-tech Seed Co Ltd, Lal Teer Livestock Ltd
Project Budget: € 1,440,860
External financing: PSI
Project period: From 01/01/2012 to 31/12/2014

The livestock sector is an important segment of the Bangladeshi economy. About 75% of the rural people in Bangladesh rely partly on livestock for their livelihood. However, productivity of livestock is in general low when compared to other countries in the region.

The project aims to improve the genetic potential of livestock as well as nutrition and health conditions. The Chinese and Bangladeshi business partners will establish the first commercial cattle and beef breeding operation in Bangladesh for the supply of high quality semen for artificial insemination services in the dairy, beef and buffalo subsectors. The sales and marketing of high quality breeding services will be combined with the supply of forage seeds, health and nutrition services to farmers. A breeding farm with laboratory facilities will be established in Mymemsingh, Bangladesh. This farm will be designed and operated in line with the highest veterinary and environmental standards. Technical assistance in the field of modern animal breeding and nutrition will be provided through the Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China. Seeds of selected forage crops will be produced and marketed in the livestock sector. In total the project will create more than 100 new jobs. The largest social and economic impact is expected in the livestock sector where livestock owners will gain from the increased productivity of their animals.
