Consortium: Gebroeders Bakker Zaadteelt en Zaadhandel BV (NL), Klein Karoo Seed Marketing (Pty.) Ltd. (ZA)
Project Budget: Euro 377,000
External financing: DeveloPPP
Project period: January 2011 – January 2013

The general aim of this project is to sustainably develop the local capacity for delivering different levels of training on the production and effective use of improved seeds in the emerging semi-commercial sector in South Africa.

The project partners – Bakker Brothers from the Netherlands and its business partner in South Africa (Klein Karoo Seed Marketing) – wish to contribute to the development of the seed industry in South Africa through education and skill development of different professionals and users in the seed industry. At the end of the project the necessary capacity will be in place for the implementation of at a range of different courses on improved seed production and utilisation.  All courses are accredited by AgriSETA and all participants are issued an officially recognised certificate after successful completion of the courses. In addition to AgriSETA the project partners work closely together with South African seed sector organisation (SANSOR) and the universities of Bloemfontein and Stellenbosch.

Frank Joosten of Advance Consulting advised on the project design and strategy and supports the project management. Most of the training activities take place at the seed testing and production farm of Klein Karoo Seed Marketing in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. During 2012 the first training courses were developed and the first batches of farmers and workers in the seed industry were welcomed to be trained for several days in subjects ranging from seed storage to soil fertility management. All courses include theoretical and practical components.
