Raanan Fish Feed Ltd is an Israeli company active in the manufacturing of extruded floating fish feed. Exporting to African countries, it identified potential for establishing production of fish feed in Ghana, thereby greatly reducing on costs associated with sea transport, insurance, import duties, clearing and forwarding. This would translate in lower wholesale and retail costs and hence bigger market potential for Raanan Fish Feed.
The company entered into a joint venture with local distributor Sefa & Jane Agro Chemicals Ltd., which possess valuable distribution skills and is very experienced in technically supporting agriculture farmers throughout Ghana. The project partners established a feed mill in PramPram, near Accra, for extruded floating tilapia and catfish feed, targeting the markets in Ghana, Nigeria and Benin. Backyard fish farmers have been trained in applying effective fish farm management techniques. The training school was equipped with demonstration ponds and hatcheries. During the project period, a total of 100 backyard farmers will be trained.
The company will make use of local raw materials to the maximum extend. To that end, in total 10 agriculture farmers will be supported
The company recruited and trained a total number of 47 staff. Production will be in accordance with ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management system), ISO 1400 (Environmental System) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health And Safety Management System) standards. The purchasing of fish by-products for the production of catfish feed will be under auspices of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). At the end of the project, production will have reached 9,800 tons representing a sales value of EUR 4.3 million.
