Bolivia: Processing of scrap metal into wheels, bogies and other sand-cast products

General information
Project location: Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Bolivia
Consortium: Agropecuaria El Parque (Argentina), Carlos Caballero SRL (Bolivia), Aceria
Project Budget: € 1,500,000
External financing: PSI Programme
Project period: From 01 January 2013 to 30 June 2015

Agropecuaria El Parque from Argentina and partners Carlos Caballero and Aceria Guadix from Bolivia will establish a casting plant to manufacture innovative steel parts (mainly wheels and bogies) for the Bolivian rail road industry and the agricultural sector. The partners will be the first in Bolivia to start production of these steel parts and intend to replace expensive imports. They will establish a joint venture company that is going to be the legal entity to implement the project. This joint venture will enter into an agreement with Carlos Caballero for the sourcing of scrap metal, the most important raw material in the production process.

The casting plant will be equipped with an induction oven, model making lathe, mould fabrication system, sand retriever system, tempering furnace, laboratory and related equipment. Furthermore the partner will invest substantially in technical assistance and knowledge transfer in order to train their staff. At least fifty six employees will be contracted and trained.

Last but not least the partners intend to set an example of excellence in the metal industry in Bolivia. This is emphasized by the introduction of several internationally recognized certification standards, such as: the ISO 9001 certification for quality management, the OHSAS 18001 certification on health and safety and the Association of American Railroads (AAR) M-1003 certification on product quality.
