Bangladesh: Specialty liners and coatings for industrial FIBC’s (or big bags)

General information
Project location: Gazaria, Mushiganj district, Bangladesh
Consortium: LC Packaging BV, Dutch-Bangla Pack Ltd
Project Budget: € 1,488,610
External financing: PSI
Project period: From May 2009 to May 2012

Applicant LC Packaging International BV and local partner Dutch Bangla Pack Ltd are involved in the production of Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers or FIBCs (commonly known as ‘big bags’ or ‘bulk bags’) in Bangladesh. As a worldwide distributor of FIBCs to the food, pharmaceutical, chemical industries and others, it identified a market for FIBCs meeting the stringent demands of the said industries in transporting and handling their produce. These industrial requirements can be met by applying a polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) coating to the fabric of the FIBC; and/or by inserting a liner into the big bag.

The project partners have invested in a facility for the production of wide-width PP/PE coatings and for the production of PE liner material. The produce will initially be processed into FIBCs within Dutch Bangla Pack’s existing FIBC confection department. A part of the market is targeted through the existing channels of LC Packaging; another part will be directly targeted from Bangladesh.
Total hardware investment amount to EUR 1.2 million, for which the partners have constructed a production hall and equipped it with an extrusion coating and film liner plant. The project has complied with the highest standards on quality management (ISO 9001:2000), environmental protection (ISO 14000), workers safety (OHSAS 18001) and food safety (ISO 22000). A number of 52 low, middle and high level staff are now employed and have received trained in various aspects related to the production processes and relevant company policies.
