External financing: Dutch Government, DEG, Rabo Bank, Agency NL
Project period: 2009 - 2012

Cocoa is a key commodity for the economies in West Africa and for the Netherlands. Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria together produce around three quarters of the world production. The Netherlands is the largest  importer and processor of cocoa products. It is in the interest of the production countries in West Africa and the processing industry in the Netherlands that the cocoa supply chain arrangements become more sustainable.

The Dutch Government together with IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative are the initiators of the Letter of Intent for sustainable cocoa production and consumption. In this letter the Dutch Government and industry partners state their commitment towards a 100% guaranteed sustainable cocoa consumption by 2025. importer and processor of cocoa products. It is in the interest of the production countries in West Africa and the processing industry in the Netherlands that the cocoa supply chain arrangements become more sustainable. Advance Consulting has supported the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation to fulfill its commitment towards the development of sustainable cocoa supply chain arrangements. This included:
  • Development of a website and a seminar in 2010 to disseminate the information of twenty-two projects in the international cocoa and chocolate manufacturing sector aimed at improving the sustainable development of the sector
  • Organisation and implementation of a study tour to Ghana for policymakers, researchers and private sector representatives on research and innovation in the cocoa sector.

In 2012 we were given the assignment by the Dutch embassy in Accra to facilitate with the formation of a consortium for the implementation of a new cocoa development project. This consortium includes different cocoa companies and support organisations active in Ghana. The program will support initiatives aiming at a sustainable cocoa supply and responsible farming practices. This will be done through support to cocoa farmers, stimulating improved farming skills and input supply, and support and link Dutch initiatives in the cocoa sector.

In addition to these assignments for the Dutch Government we also work for several companies active in the cocoa sector. This includes ECOM (Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria), Armajaro (Ghana) and Continaf (DR Congo) and Theobroma (Sierra Leone). We assist these clients with the development and mobilisation of funds for projects aimed at supporting sustainable cocoa production and certification in the respective production countries.
