Global Innovation Fund (GIF)
The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is an innovation fund that invests in the development, piloting and scaling of innovations targeted at improving the lives of the world's poorest people. The fund aims to support a portfolio of innovations that collectively open up opportunities and improve lives for hundreds of millions of people across the developing world.
The Global Innovation Fund accepts applications on a rolling basis.
The Global Innovation Fund provides funding ranging from USD 50,000 to USD 15 million and uses different forms of capital (grants, equity, debt and hybrid capital, etc.) depending on the type of organization and project.
The fund aims to help breakthrough solutions to global development challenges. It backs innovations with the potential for social impact at a large scale, which can be new technologies, business models, policy practices, technologies or behavioural insights. Applicants can be innovators at all stages of their life cycle (from start-up and pilot-testing to large-scale implementation) and can focus on any sector relevant to international development, provided they improve the lives of those living on less than USD 5 a day.
Innovations can be located in any developing country.
All types of organizations may apply, including social enterprises, for-profit companies, non-profit organisations, government agencies, international organisations, and researchers in any country.
GIF is a very competitive programme, attracting far more applications than can be funded. Selection follows a four-staged procedure:
- Stage one: concept note
- Stage two: conference call with GIF investment team members, given that applicants have passed the initial stage
- Stage three: full proposal, subject to GIF's positive evaluation of the concept note and conference call
- Stage four: due diligence
