Mozambique: Solar Works!
Renewable Energy & Climate
SolarWorks! has set up the distribution and sales of solar home systems in Mozambique. The systems are marketed to low- and middle-income households that lack access to reliable sources of electricity for lighting, mobile-phone charging and other purposes. Advance Consulting assisted SolarWorks! in acquiring a grant from the Energy and Environment Partnership of Southern and East Africa.
During the project, SolarWorks! has set up its head office in Matola and has developed sales into 4 regions (Matola & Molotana, Tchumene & Zumpeto, Manhica and Inhambane). During its fifteen months duration, the project has reached 2,935 households and created 72 full-time jobs.
SolarWorks! is considered one of the few successful renewable energy projects in Mozambique. The demand for their products is high in the country and the region, and they expect to continue growing over the next years into the Beira area, and from there into the Zambezia and Nampula provinces. SolarWorks has also negotiated a cooperation with Vodacom, one of the biggest mobile network providers in Mozambique.
The EEP Africa grant has helped to scale the business in such a way that, towards the end of the project, SolarWorks! was able to enter much-needed debt facilities. Advance Consulting assisted the partners to develop the project proposal and business plan. For more information on this project, please contact Krisje Theuns-van Hees.
